Managing a business encompasses diverse duties including supervising, budgeting, marketing and organizing. A manager has to wear many hats and deal with a number of various problems on a daily basis. The career of a small business manager is great for a person who loves to multi task and possesses great leadership ability. The job title of "manager"; often comes with a great deal of pressure to keep the company running smoothly. A person pursing this career should have a calm head and outstanding problem solving skills.

Required Education for a Small Business Management Degree

A business degree may not be required by some employers to promote a worker to a management position. However, most companies do require some type of business management degree before an employee is considered for a position in management, whether it be an associate's, bachelor's or master's degree. Those seeking employment in the small business management field will find it easier to find a position if they do have a bachelor's degree in business management. No matter what type of education is received, most companies still require their new hires to start out at an entry level position and move up to a management position. However, those newly hired employees who have achieved a business management degree may be moved up to a management position in a shorter period of time. The daily tasks of a small business manager vary depending upon what field of business he or she is in.

Responsibilities of Small Business Managers

Managers usually have a group of staff they are expected to lead and supervise. A manager may also be required to solve complex business problems by implementing procedures and solutions for staff to follow. He or she may need to seek out marketing and advertising opportunities for the business, such as newspaper classifieds and community events. Managers are generally involved in budget planning and maintenance. They may also have a hand in developing goals for the company and implementing the strategies and motivation needed to obtain these company goals.

Small Business Management Coursework

A bachelor's degree in business management is usually offered at every major university and at most online universities. The program is focused on teaching its students how to manage people and solve problems. A business management degree also possesses the curriculum to teach its students about business and social ethics in the workplace. General psychology and international business ethics are some of the courses that may be required for completion. Courses such as business finance, principles of marketing, computer technology and business communication can teach students the administrative skills needed to become a business manager.

There are several courses that are required for the completion of a business management degree. A student may then need to choose what concentration of study he or she desires to focus on for elective courses. Some of these concentrations of study may include international business, marketing management or informational technology management. The student will take several elective courses in his or her specific concentration but will also learn the same management skills necessary through the core courses. A business management student is usually exposed to many interactive activities and case studies in his or her courses that teach how to handle certain management situations.

Earning Potential for Small Business Managers

The employment rate for business managers is expected to grow by 12 percent from the years 2006 to 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of jobs available in the business management field is expected to grow at the same rate as all other occupations. The average salary for a business manager was between $48,200 and $90,350 in the year 2006.
