Secondary education focuses on the education of children in grades 7 thru 12. Studying secondary education usually prepares people for a career as a high school or middle school teacher. Most secondary teachers have a specialty subject which they teach, such as history, math, English, science and art.

 <info>

Secondary teachers are usually found teaching classes in middle and high schools.

A secondary teacher is required to have a specified certificate entitling them to teach at this level.

Unlike an elementary teacher, secondary teachers usually specialize in one subject area and teach only that subject.

 What is considered secondary education?

Secondary education usually includes grades 7-12, though some would argue that secondary education only happens in high school. Typically a secondary education endorsement on a teaching certificate allows someone to teach from grade 6 to grade 12. This is considered the second portion of general schooling, with the first being primary school, or elementary education.

What kinds of degrees are needed to work in secondary education?

A secondary teacher is required to have a bachelor's degree, which typically requires a high school diploma along with four years of college. Depending on the program, some elect to get their teaching certificate along with their bachelor's degree. Whether this is the route an individual chooses or not, a secondary teacher is required to have a separate major and teaching endorsement (these are usually in the same field). Earning a secondary teaching certificate requires a student teaching internship in a middle school or high school. This internship usually lasts for two academic quarters or one semester.

What career opportunities are opened with a degree in secondary education?

Like any job in the education field, teaching is the most obvious and most common career path people choose. Job opportunities for teachers over the next 10 years will vary from good to excellent, depending on the location, grade level, and subject of specialization. Usually school districts with a higher poverty rate, less money and fewer resources need teachers in a bad way. California, Idaho, Hawaii, Alaska, Utah and New Mexico are areas that will especially need teachers. After a few years in education, and maybe more advanced education, a teacher can choose to advance into department head positions or principalships.

How much money does an elementary education professional make?

A teacher's salary depends greatly on experience and location. The average national annual salary for a teacher is $46,000, with a low end of the spectrum making $26,000 and the higher end making $71,000. Beginning teachers, with just a bachelor's degree, earn an average of $31,700 a year. Private school teachers generally earn less than public school teachers, but may be given other benefits, such as free or subsidized housing. Teachers can boost their salary by volunteering to coordinate extracurricular activities or by perusing more education such as a master's degree.
