What are some other fields in engineering besides general, mechanical and electrical?

Engineers are highly specialized in many different fields. Some examples of specific fields are aerospace engineering, agricultural engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer hardware engineering, environmental engineering, health and safety engineering, industrial engineering, marine and naval engineering, material engineering, geological engineering, nuclear engineering, and petroleum engineering. Each one of these sub-fields of engineering are very different from the others. Usually professionals who change their specializations, move between related fields, such as chemical and biomedical engineering.

How can someone get into the field of engineering?

In order to even get a foot in the door of the engineering field, professionals need at least a bachelor's degree. Engineering can be a very fun field, but it takes a lot of training to be able to function even at an entry level engineering job. Most engineers go on to get a master's degree or PhD in order to become more specialized and more marketable in the career field. In addition to the standard, academic engineering degree, many colleges offer 2- or 4-year degree programs in engineering technology. These technology programs are more hands-on and teach students how to apply their skills, rather than teaching the more theoretical threads of engineering. Graduates from these schools are not considered to be the same level of an engineer as those graduating with a bachelor's, master's or PhD degree.

What career opportunities are available in the field of engineering?

Engineers will continue to be needed to design, build, test, and improve manufactured products. Overall job opportunities in engineering are expected to be good because there are not as many engineering graduates as there used to be. Engineers are needed all over the world. Depending on the field of specialization, there may be opportunity to travel during a career in engineering. Some fields are more competitive than others and may require more advanced degrees for entry. Engineers have the opportunity to take a number of roles in the process of creating new technology. Some help in the process of developing products, some go into selling products and others move in to supervisory positions. There are so many different sub-fields in the field of engineering and most engineers specialize in just one or two. Because of the many options, the career choices in this field are wide open.
