RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!

School not recommended by Janice Janes on July 27, 2010
6/10 people found this review helpful

My boyfriend was going to go here but I put a stop to that. My BF had called and called and there was never anyone available to answer his questions. The only time his "enrollment" counselor reached out to him was during the financial aid process.

My friend also attended UOP and she's in debt because of them mismanaging her loans..They gave her a refund check and after her next block of classes started they wanted the money back! It's crazy & I call bullshit on 90% of the positive reviews here who in the hell pays that much money to "teach themselves" I can teach myself at home free of charge I'm not going to pay 1500 per class to tech myself! That's absurd and I'm quite sure more than half of the positive reviews are coming from UOP employees.

Run & never look back and if your in the process of joining this "school" call the department of education and have them removed from your list of schools and also remove them from your fasfa.

They Are All About Money

I really wish I would have researched this school more before signing up for it. They are all about Money. Its like "ok pay me $2,000 per block then I will give you a degree". There is always a catch for this University. For example, I was going to be out of town for 2 weeks and I really did not want to start a new set of classes because I would not have access to internet. I told University of Phoenix about my situation and they told me it would affect my financial aid if I didn't start the date they scheduled for me. First of all, that did not make sense. How would it affect my financial aid and I am the one who was gonna pay for my classes out of my pocket?? They just are all about money and they do not try to work with you at all.

I even wanted to change my major and they said it would affect my finaincial aid. They are just crooked at that University. I would not recomment this school to anyone.

When my husband went to talk to counselors about receiving another degree we were treated like kings. However, one week into the online class the instructor did not have any useful information. The instructor was still giving everyone the warm fuzzies about their experiences. It was a total waste of time and yet to drop out after one week it would cost us 35% of the total cost of what it would be to finish the course. They even had a tuition increase after the course started and it was applied to our cost.

This school is selling you a false hope. Maybe in some professions they are willing to accept this type of education but in my book you are better off going to a junior college and getting a better education. Once they have your credit card account they will take what they want without notice.

4th class and counting.....

School recommended by Texas Girl on July 24, 2010
4/4 people found this review helpful

So I recently signed up to attend the UOP and so far so good. I am on my fourth class and so far I really like it. I chose this school vs a traditional university (which I have attended and received 60 hours from) because I could 1) start the program right away 2) I was working full time and recently married so the way the classes were structured was perfect for me and my lifestyle 3) I could earn my degree in a more timely fashion.

Ive read a few of the reviews and honestly some of them seem like nightmares and others seem to be a little out there.

When i went to a traditional university, you had some professors that were easier than others just like you have some bosses that are ball breakers and some that are relaxed. Its not different at the UOP. All the teachers Ive had have been really structured and on their game. All of my work I have turned in I stand behind because I believe in doing a good job. So the grades that I am earning are mine.

Someone said they are not taking test.....well I am and the test at the end of the course are the hardest part! I mean Im having a hard time adjusting to the test b/c I was never a good test taker and they way the information is laid out, you really need to understand every word you are reading in your classes so thats where Im struggling but this has always been a struggle for me.

Its hard to understand everything at times because I am not in an environment where I really understand all the terms but that just comes with any class and any degree. Once you get into your field and start connecting the dots, you get a better understanding at that point. Or if you work in your field, you gain understanding their as well.

Working in groups is the normal structure at most universities now. I know when I was at my last school UTA and started working in my major course work, I worked in groups all the time and our instructors told us flat out that this is what you will be doing from here on out. its like this new thing now to help prepare you for the business world.

Im glad I read these reviews so that Ill know what to look out for but all of my advisors have been really helpful and I have not had any problems with the customer service I have received. When dealing with "people" i have learned not to expect much. My professors at the traditional university were blah at times and some really connected. I mean it is what it is. I really hope to continue to have a good experience by working hard and doing my best.

Got out quickly! The Enrollment Counselor is very nice at the beginning, but when you tell them that you would like to change the form of the Degree, Attitudes fly very quickly. Cannot trust nothing with them, because they will take your "low" and together with the Academic Counselor will use it against you. They do not believe in you, you are another number and name for them.

They admit to their mistakes but hold you responsible

School not recommended by Cassie White on July 16, 2010

I attended University of Phoenix for the Fall of 2008. I was hoping to get my Bachelors of Science in Psychology. When I got what I thought was my financial aid leftovers from them I cashed it and upgraded my computer to make the online learning experience easier because my computer was seriously outdated.

Then just before my next block of classes in December I was contacted my the financial aid team telling me that They made a mistake and that I had to pay them back the money that they sent me on accident. When I told them I was not able to because it was gone and that the check did not direct me to pay for my classes They told me if I do not pay they would not let me into class and it would make my attendance go down and they would drop me out of school

UoP made good on their promise, and I am no longer a student there and I had to take my tax return to pay them back for their mistake.

I wasn't liking the program anyway.. How can you possibly have a successful "group project" in the 5 week block period they have for each of their classes. ON top of everything else.. I got charged just for the first few classes a little over 7 grand which took up all of my grant money, and the classes were all repeats of what I learned in my community college level psychology!

Try another online school

School not recommended by Jean on July 15, 2010
19/22 people found this review helpful

This school has the potential to be so much better especially since it was one of the pioneers of the online learning format (if not THE pioneer).

What is disappointing is:

1. much more pricey then it needs to be

2. students who want an easy way out more so then convenience and academic rigor - this impacts the level of depth you get and impacts the learning.

3. Courses tend to repeat themselves, especially in the management courses - unnecessary

4. If your unlucky you get professors that are not engaged (just post discussion questions) and do not seem to have a solid academic background. Part of the problem is that UoP seems to hire so many of their students who didn't learn much of the content and in turn they are teaching or in admissions, enrollment, financial aid, etc.

There is nothing wrong with hiring your students but they seem to need fresh faces and individuals who are good professors.

WORST SCHOOL EVER!!!

I went to UOP for medical administration thinking i was finally going to be able to get a job when im finished but i sure was wrong! they were real quick to sign you up and make it sound oooh so great but in reality it wwasnt.

Signing up was so easy and it started out very well but by the time i got to my 3rd block of classes i went through 12 different councilors because they all quit, then one day i recieved a letter in the mail saying my financial aid was returned.

so i called asking why and was told its an error we are getting it back so then everything was ok for a few days, and then i couldnt get in my classroom it said "you do not have access beyond this point" and i had perfect attendance and A's.

so i called my councilor and he said try tech support and they just transfered me over and over for 3 hours then i hung up and called my councilor back and he didnt answer my questions so i called my other councilor who informed me he couldnt help so i called my enrollment councilor who also couldnt help. so i emailed my professors and i was able to still turn in assignents by email until i was dropped because of attendance wich i couldnt meet because i was locked out of my classroom.

i wouldnt recomend this school to my worst enemy! oh and on top of that my tuition was all paid by student loans and i recieved bills saying i owed 4000.00 then i didnt pay so i got one saying 3000.00 still didnt pay and it was dropped to 2000.00 and then dropped to 1000.00 and they still have me as enrolled a year later so i cant sign up for school elsewhere its all a BIG HUGE JOKE!!!

theni tried to recieve a letter stating i was no longer enrolled to go to a local school and talked several departments and was told i cant have a letter until i pay them 4000 and i checked my student loans to make a payment and they are suddenly non existant... so all in all i wouldnt go there if i was paid too

An Excellent Learning Experience

I received an Associates in Business, a Bachelor of Science in Human Services/Management and will be starting the graduate program for a Master of Science in Psychology all from University of Phoenix. I work a full time job and am the caregiver for my quadriplegic mom. University of Phoenix has provided me with a way to further my education.

The coursework involves a lot of reading and is very intense. University of Phoenix has taught me excellent communication skills. The learning team experience is critical to both personal and professional growth. It has helped with my communication techniques while also providing insight into resolving conflicts.

Like anything else in life there were a few minor problems along the way. But I did have positive classmate and professor interaction and an overall excellent learning experience. I am looking forward to beginning the graduate program. I highly recommend University of Phoenix.

I ATTENDED SCHOOL THEIR FOR ALMOST A YEAR, IT WAS A BAD CHOICE ON MY PART. BE SURE AND DO YOUR RESEARCH, BEFORE YOU DECIDE ON AN ONLINE COLLEGE. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT CHOOSE THIS ONE, YOU WILL REGRET IT.

THEY HONESTLY DO TAKE ALL YOUR MONEY, AND CAN NOT EXPLAIN WHAT THEY DID WITH IT. FINANCIAL AIDE IGNORES YOU. YOU CAN'T GET A STRAIGHT ANSWER FROM ANYONE AT THAT SCHOOL. I WOULD RUN AS FAST AS I COULD AWAY FROM UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX. THERE ARE MUCH BETTER SCHOOLS OUT THERE.

Phoenix may be a college. But I honestly think it is just like any other business that are primarily there for your money. I am finishing up my 2nd and last class now. I tried and Phoenix is not for me. The good part about Phoenix is you can get a degree. However many businesses dont think much of UOP.

I go to class one night a week for fours hours. Class is group discussion only. (No assighnments to be done in class) What I thought were instructors are basically facilitators. When I asked for help on a paper my "facilitator told me to ask my classmates for help. This really bothered me.

They pile you up with lots of online reading and then you write a paper or give a slide presentation on what you read along with your team mates. (groups of 4)This can be very frustrating because sometimes your team mates do not fall through.

To put it straight.. I am getting good grades but I am not learning anything. I on purposely wrote a paper without required references and I still got 5 out of 5 points because I handed it in on time. I know the teacher did not even read it.

Its a good school if you just want to get a degree. But if you want to learn something, you might look elsewhere just in case. I am not going to bash Phoenix to much. But I tried it and I did not like it at all. You just might like it.

Hard work + patience = success

I earned a degree in Business Management last year from UOP and I must say the experience was both negative and positive. Yes....you get bad team mates and bad teachers but not all the time, its just the price we pay for dealing with people, once you get over this and make the most of your education you'd be amazed how much you learn not only about the classes you take but also about yourself.

This school is a survival of the fittest because of the amount of work you get and I've seen students drop out simply because they didn't like the teacher or the work was too much, what a bad approach to better yourself in life.

My ONLY negative about this school is the name....if you go on an interview and your up against another person who went to USC...who do think will land the job? UNLESS you know how to present yourself and communicate....this is what UOP teaches you that the other universities don't.....strong communication and people skills....

I've been thinking about going back for an MBA however I'm stuck because of this issue, you can be very strong in communication but it always comes down to the name and I've noticed other universities have stronger networking opportunities than UOP...regardless which school you choose you will grow as a person......period...

UOP Faculty Loves To Fail You

School not recommended by Andrew Thomas on July 04, 2010
23/38 people found this review helpful

I am currently enrolled in this school and one thing I have learned from class to class is that if you want to pass the class then do not post something that will offend the facilitator, and I'm not talking about posting something directly to the facilitator I am talking about posting something pertaining to a discussion question which should be posted in your own thoughts and opinions.

Once you offend one of these facilitators you are bound to fail because they will single you out and fail you purposely because it is their job to fail at least 1 or 2 students each class to keep the grades from looking like they are just passing everyone. Don't believe me? Enroll and find out for yourself.

Please people don't waste your money like I am, your good for the first month or two because you are on a trial basis, but that's where they will make it seem like the best school ever, but after that trial is over and financial aid really locks you into the school; that's when the fire starts to burn you alive trust me you will get screwed over just like me.

Some students make it out alive because they were lucky and did not get on the bad side of the teachers in the school but I can guarantee those students did experience some kind of wrongful grading from these instructors because their grading is not what you could call true grading, these people have hundreds of assignments to grade daily so don't think they are going to spend so much time grading your precious homework that you spent all day doing thinking you would be making an A on it when you have people with no time to grade assignments to grade your assignment.

I hope to god this reaches someone and saves them from the horror I am going through. Please pray for me.

I thought it was good...

I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona, and my first graduate degree from Webster University – both brick and mortar, fully accredited, and reputable schools of higher learning. I wanted to pursue my doctoral degree and keep my job at the same time; UOP seemed like a great solution.

To be honest, I thought that the program might be a cake-walk… not the case folks. In fact, the program is quite challenging. I did not finish the degree due to my military obligations, but I do plan on finishing up that program (DM/IST). The online venue requires one to read a lot more than they otherwise might in a class room environment.

Interacting with other students online is an absolute must. The research skills that I gained from UOP have helped me to excel through a second master's degree program – I am grateful for my experience at UOP.

The professors at UOP are as good as you'd find anywhere else quite frankly. During my first year's residency I was able to gather that these instructors were very well qualified PhDs, and very well trained for teaching at the doctoral level. I liked it… I thought it was good.

UoP is great

I understand that everyone has different experiences, and I respect those who have different views than I do. I also experienced good and bad.

I agree that the "recruiters" pressure you quite a bit. I was initially just looking for information when I came to UoP. If you have a spine and hold your ground, people pressuring you won't matter. I was getting pressure from other universities as well, it's just the nature of the beast. I chose UoP for convenience.

I have had good and bad facilitators and teammates. The bottom line is that I learned far more in UoP than I did at Oklahoma University. My classes have always been focused on what I should learn. I was thankful to not be in an auditorium being talked at by a professor who really could care less if I was there, let alone know my name.

The teammate thing is a non-issue if you are a leader. I have had to take control of my team and I feel that only helps. My degree is in Business Management and I am grateful to UoP for my education.... which I made up for with the oodles of cash I had to throw at them. You get out what you put in.

You can get a lot more and pay a lot less....

My problem with the University of Phoenix - and quite frankly all of for-profit university education in the United States - is that it is so incredibly expensive for what you get. I took a few classes from the University of Phoenix and they were okay. I didn't love the online experience compared to a classroom but that's not a reflection on UofP. It might even be a reflection on me.

But then I realized that for many online classes - accounting, languages, calculus - you could go out and hire a PhD or a native French speaker to give you private 1-on-1 lessons for 25% of what UofP charges you on an hourly basis. Heck, you could probably hire a Noble-prize winning chemist to give you private chemistry lessons for less.

So not only do you get lesser instruction, but you pay much more for it. And all for a piece of paper that an HR department may or may not recognize as being valuable.

Perfect solution for a single mother

School recommended by Lisa on June 12, 2010
58/65 people found this review helpful

I was a newly single mother with three children - I had 66 credits to my name, and was attempting to juggle a full-time work schedule and three little girls. Although I was earning a modest wage, I knew that to be able to support my girls at a decent lifestyle (with no child support) that adding to my credits was the only option.

I researched many schools. University of Phoenix was about the only school that had the accreditation that was solid. I was able to work full-time and earn my degree, while still being the mother to my little girls! Prior to attending UOP, I had attempted classes at local schools - do you know how hard it is to attend night classes?

All these negative reports are primarily from negative people. School, like everything in life, becomes what you put into it.

I have looked into the MBA programs in San Diego, and UOP's MBA is actually CHEAPER than Cal State San Marcos - YES! So, for all you negative people that complain about the cost of UOP - here is a program that provides a chance for a working, single mother to go to school and earn a degree - and for a reasonable price. Plus, there is a phenomenal amount of support through the academics/enrollment process. These counselors truly care about the students that they enroll.

I have to say that the negativity must be from a few that just chose to not either do their work, or work in a team. After all, aren't all teams made up of different personalities - and working together, and learning to work together is all part of the process.

Thank you to UOP for helping me to achieve my dream.

Do the research before you go to University of Phoenix

School not recommended by J Stanton on June 09, 2010
66/77 people found this review helpful

I'm not going to trash the University of Phoenix. I'm sure some people have had good experiences with them. I will just relay the truth about what happened to me. I enrolled in one of their Masters Programs. I found the process of completing the enrollment process to be very high pressure and they pushed very hard to rush me along.

I was promised guidance and direction that did not materialize and I couldn't get people to return my calls when I had questions. It seemed to me all they cared about was the money and could not have cared less for me as a student.

I saw enough red flags that I decided to Google the university with the key words problems and complaints. I should have done that first. There is a very, very large volume of complaints about this college. Two other people who work in the same building as I also had problems with UOP and withdrew.

Luckily I only did 1 workshop and got out before I invested any money. Once I withdrew, then they finally called me back. The person who called me was pushy and a bit snotty. I am so glad I got out when I did. Thank you to all you who posted your bad experiences on line, you saved me.

I am now enrolled in a Masters Program at a SUNY College at 30% of the cost of UOP. This SUNY College answers my calls, works with me and is much smaller so I anticipate a much better quality education.

One other point, I know people in HR Departments and various managers who hire employees and I will tell you for a fact, they do not look upon UOP Degrees as highly as they do those from other colleges. Some disregard UOP Degrees altogether.

So if UOP works for you, great, just do your research before you enroll and make sure you know what you are getting into.

All for Financial Profit

School not recommended by Allison on June 03, 2010

The University of Phoenix is operating simply to profit financially. The target demographic is supposed to be working adults, but look out if you actually are a working adult. Sometimes the rigors of work dictate that different steps or measures be taken as far as school is concerned., i.e., extended travel, 10 hr meetings, etc.

The academic counselors and the financial counselors do not take this into consideration. They act like they are your support, but when the going gets tough, the tough get going. The University of Phoenix has definately taught me a life lesson...if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Nobody is complaing about the school itself

School recommended by Dana on June 02, 2010

I completed both my Associates in Criminal Justice and my Bachelors in Criminal Justice Administration with the University of Phoenix. So far I have read several reviews and nobody is complaining about the actual school..people are complaining about instructors, other students, advisors...that does not make up the entire school.

I have had instructors who are not helpful, and those who are overly helpful-I have had students who pulled their weight and others who didn't, and when I had trouble with advisors I requested I work with someone else and I never had a problem.

Any of the problems thus far I have read could be the same problems that you have in a classroom setting. There are schools that cost more than UofP, there are teachers that suck everywhere, advisors that don't do crap everywhere, and there will always be some jackass in your class who doesn't want to do anything.

Bottom line I have completed my degree, and it did cost a bit more than a public university (not more than a private one and remember this is listed as a Private University) and my credits DO transfer to other schools and my degree was recognized by employers.

Going to school online allowed me to have two children and work and still complete my schooling, I even HAD one of my children while enrolled and they give you maternity/medical leave just like any university would. I would recommend UofP.

Good School

I must say I read a person was a UOP facilitator from 86 to 94. Come on, are you kidding me? That was the infancy of online education. I think in the 80's they had mail order degrees which were not accredited.

Anyway I love UOP. I got my associates and now I am in the bachelors program. I have not had any problems. I have read most of these reviews and I just don't know what to say to the people with the negative commits.

The school is accredited; the course goes though a text book in a very short time and tests your knowledge with the essays. Let's look at the truth; you can't get into UOP without at least 60 credits. So you go to the associate program Axia which is 9 week classes and they teach you EVERYTHING with it comes to writing.

So people who never had college or don't have the credits actually have associate degrees by the time they start there bachelor's program. So what people are actually saying is people that transferred from other colleges to UOP really haven't learned anything, interesting.

I hear the crying and what I hear from government agencies, being in one myself is that UOP degrees will be considered just like any other degree. So, I say to people who are trying to make a decision about UOP, It is a lot on you and you learn a lot but it takes dedication and hard work but that's life. If you don't have an associate give it at lease that long, you will want to obtain your bachelor's from UOP.

No Regrets...Great School and Experience!

I attended Ohio University for 3 years and averaged a 3.8...however I felt like I hadn't learned a thing! All I ever did was STUDY for the exam and after it was over, I forgot everything I had learned.

Eventually, loans caught up to me and I had to start working full time to pay for college. You can't work full time and go to actual classes unless you are doing night classes, which I refuse to do. My life doesn't revolve around college.

UOP allowed me to finish my degrees online and also have a full time career. I don't know why everyone else had negative reviews, but I felt like this learning experience made me teach myself. The professors really do not do the teaching...you read, research, and teach yourself.

Bottom line is we need a degree to have really nice paying jobs, and UOP offers great programs to allow you to earn a degree online.I will advise my kids to attend this school, that way they can work full time and pay as they go instead of getting all of those loans like I did for Ohio University.

An honest review (from a graduate with good grammar)

School recommended by Paige on June 01, 2010
61/68 people found this review helpful

Let me preface this review by saying that I would have regarded "The Truth about UoP" with a little higher credibility if the author actually used correct grammar. By college level academia, one should know the difference between 'your' and 'you're.'

In 2006, I acquired a bachelors degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix. Unless anything has changed in the past four years, I found the program to be even more challenging than traditional college classes. It required a great deal of participation, research, and paper-writing. This challenge applies especially to people with full-time jobs. However, I felt a huge sense of accomplishment when I finally reached completion.

Truthfully, the group assignments usually left a lot to be desired. As others have mentioned, they only proved to be easy when all group members pulled their weight. I think the facilitators/instructors should probably check in with the students periodically about such issues.

Apart from that, I felt that my own instructors were GENERALLY very helpful and qualified, having a great deal of field experience and accreditation. The program expects 100% fulfillment on a daily basis. You are basically teaching yourself with the assistant of a guide.

Of course, if you are not a self-motivator and feel that the sheer obligation of going to class is more effective in your studies, then this is not the program for you.
