Not a legitimate degree

Although it may initially appear that a degree from an online school is a good idea, consider that employers will read "University of Phoenix" on your resume. The school positions itself, and is well known for, churning out degrees to anyone willing to pay their exorbitant tuition prices. Like many other online "schools," the University of Phoenix is a for-profit institution. This means that profit motives trump the desire to offer a quality education.

As a former recruiter, I would not take seriously candidates from a school of this caliber. If you're considering earning a higher degree, consider also what employers will think when they see the university on your resume. If you consider it plausible that employers will not consider your university to even be a university, it might be a good idea to look elsewhere.

Consider, for example, that legitimate universities offer flexible schedules and mixed mode (partial online, partial face-to-face) classes. A degree from any bricks and mortar school will be worth much more in the long run.

Re: The runaround, I should of look into it more

I am going thru this experience of the run around right now. If anyone is reading this UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX IS EXPENSIVE AND THEIR FINANCIAL AID DEPARTMENT HAS BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. They never get back with you and then they lied to get you off the phone. This school is all about the money I would love to report this school to the Higher Learner and Federal Financial Aid and let them know that purposely holding funds even after I did not authorize them to handle my account. I once authorized them to handle my fund which is giving them permission to carry over any funds but I did not want them to do it anymore I sign an updated paper stating that I do not give them permission then all of the sudden everything change I got a letter stating that my funds would be release on August 14 but I did not receive my funds and when I called Sallie Mae they informed me it was up to the school to release the funds so I try to call my financial representative and they used an excuse of they were waiting for my grade to come in and then it will take 3 to 5 day for them to get the funds and then 3 to 5 days to submit in my account. Again this to me is the runaround because they get everything deposit in their account that same day of disbursment while I authorize them to handle the fund but because I change over to not authorize all of sudden it takes two weeks to process everything. This school is a rip off and will do everything to hold on to your money and it is your money because you have to pay it back once school is finished. I still have an outstanding balance on my account and course waiting yet they are holding my funds to pay for these courses. IT DOES NOT TAKE TWO WEEKS FOR THE SCHOOL TO RECEIVE A DISBURSMENT IT IS ELECTRONICAL SENT TO THE SCHOOL ONCE THEY SAY IT IS OK. DO NOT FALL FOR THE EXCUSES. One reason to leave this school because they are charging for e-books that I can not use instead of giving me the option they are not dedicated to your education. It is all about the money and I will try to report them the best I can.

TERRIBLE

I would not recommend this school to someo0ne like me, who is a mother. I feel the school was after the money more than trying to help me with my education. I always heard from my admissions counselor, but never my financial aid counselor who alwyas wanted to only talk to me about what I have to pay to them. July, 2009, the school raised their tuition for education to $9,400. I was told I would have to take out loans every 8 months for my classes. I think that online schools are very tricky and only want your money and to keep you in more debt then you need to be in. People should check throughly because once you are trapped, it is hard to get away. And this school uses its first class as an introductory class where it is not a transfer credit. Be careful.

I HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE WITH UOP AS TAMMY

I had the same aweful experience as Tammy except I did pass the class. I never got financial aid because they messed up the award letter giving a year earlier to date making it look like I have already used all of my aid(I had $65,000 left)But I did get a bill over $3000.00. Strangely enough that I dealt with-it was the fact that everyone was unreachable. I consistantly got the run around and phone calls & emails returned after a couple of weeks. My enrollment advisor was the only one reachable but unfortunately he did not have the right answers. I finally (after serveral months) withdrew. None one still did not noticed me gone but now I owe for two more classes that I am not even there for.

hated it

Did not like this school at all, am surprised it is named a top school.

All classwork goes through microsoft outlook through discussion threads which can get complicating. Most of the work is team based and you pay $80 a class for e-books. You don't even get an actual book, so in order to do any work at all, you have to be in front of the computer unless you want to spend extra for ink to print it all out. If you don't pass a class, which I didn't then you have to pay for the class in cash before moving to the next class, even if you get financial aide. For one class they tell me I owe $3,ooo! that is way too expensive for me.

Seeking Master Degree

Overall, the course work is very challenging for a master's program.A large amount of writing is expected so be prepared.APA format is required and strictly enforced, as it should be.

Online participation is required 4 of the 7 days during the week by responding twice to online posts. Some professors require 250-400 word "relevant" responses so time spent online can be significant. Some professor are more helpful than others while advisors are always very helpful and encouraging.

Learning teams are required and most classes require 1 learning team project to be completed per week in addition to individual work.It can be frustrating when members of your group don't contribute.Even though a team evaluation form is completed, past experience proves this to be of no use. Many times, group members receive same grade regardless of contribution.

Response time from a large number of professors is slow.It can take up to two days for professors to respond. However, I have come across a few professors who respond in a timely manner, within 1 day.The grading policy is fair. However, many professors do not give feedback for completed work.

The week begins on a Tuesday and ends on a Monday with most work due on Monday which is very helpful for people who work during the week.Tuition related, it is very costly.Financial aid is available. Transition from one class to the next is super fast. One class will end on Monday, and the next class will start Tuesday unless changes have been made. This allows you to complete the online program within 2 years or so.

Overall, with any online program, UPO has pros and cons.Do as much research as possible to see if this school is right for you.I don't care what anyone tells you, the online program is no joke and does require a good bit of time.

University of Phoenix Candidate for Ed Overall

It was a very good experience. The coursework was very challenging, but appropriate for doctoral level work. The classmate and professor interactions were very good. I learned a lot and found that the professors were very knowledgeable and interested in helping us succeed. It did not prepare me for a new career as I was unable to finish the degree due to the cost. It is very expensive. But, as I said before - it was high quality education!
