Can't fix stupid!

Last semester my son was scheduled only two (2) classes. He was to graduate this June. He and I both called the school to verify that he would still graduate in June and questioned the fact that he was only scheduled two classes. We were both told that no, he will still graduate in June. Now here we are in the supposedly last semester and guess what? He will have to attend another quarter because he needs four classes and two of those cannot be taken the same semester. He is attending in Strongsville, Ohio and we (his parents) live in South Carolina so guess what? More rent to pay for three more months. Seems like they need to have someone running the place that has half a brain.

ITT Technical Institute. I am reading what everyone is writing and I am disapointed. Firs ITT Tech, is accredited, and the US Gov approves of their degrees.

The cost is high, and if you dont learn anything at ITT then you are not applying yourself. ITT doesnt waste time with stupid classes that you will not need, such as music for example. if your going for a CEET degree then you dont need to know anything but how to, use your equipment, troubleshoot circuits, write code and design circuits. all the other classes that a major univesity teach you are a waste of time and money. do your research for the career you want to go into and then choose your school. Oh and ITT may be a technical institute, but it is still a collage, and it is still a valid degree that you recive, and in the end that is what employers are looking for they want to know that you can make the commitment. all the training you need will be provided by the employer. I know I have worked for several Electronic companies, and will be graduating ITT in May.

Cashing In On An ITT Promise

School recommended by Jeff Myers on March 15, 2010
2/2 people found this review helpful

I graduated the AAS/EET program from ITT Tech in Nashville, TN back in 1990. I graduated with a 3.7 average. I was a cab driver when I started the school until Service Merchandise came looking for someone to fill a position in the Technical Services Dept. I got the job.

I stayed with SM until I was released in January of 1995. By the end of March my wife and I were moving to Roanoke, VA and then eventually to Rocky Mount (VA).

I had always wished I could have gotten my Bachelor's Degree, but during the time I was in Nashville, all they offered was the Associate's Degree, until 1994. But, by that time I was no longer interested in getting my Bachelor's degree.

Fast forward to the present, and after several jobs in the industry, ITT has now opened up a branch in Salem, VA which is about 10-15 miles from where I work.

One of the attractive features of going to ITT is that they promise that if you need refreshing on anything all you have to do is come and you can audit the classes free of charge.

However, now that I am some 20 years removed from my original education, after talking to the Dean of the school, she isn't sure which classes I'll be able to audit since the curriculum has changed; I may have to buy new books on top of that.

I'm going back so I can finally get my Bachelor's, which I think is essential to surviving in the electronics field these days. I would have had much better opportunities where we moved to if I had already gone the 3rd year.

I thought ITT was a great school when I went; I thought that I was in electronics boot camp and that my education was being geared toward design work. Had I been able to and gone the 3rd year right after finishing the first 2, that's exactly what I would have been doing.

So, we'll see how this turns out. They require more general studies than when I was in the first time. Back then the only other course besides electronics and math was a Technical Writing course. Now you have to study ethics and environmental issues and all kinds of other stuff which I didn't have to take back then.

My belief about this whole thing is, since I've paid for an Associate's degree, then I should be able to take all the classes that are required for the Associate's Degree, now, without having to pay any extra. I won't receive any letter grade for the work, but at least I would have the knowledge and would be ready for the 3rd year when it starts. They've just recently started the school, so I will have to wait for 2 years before they start the 3rd year. That's why I've decided to go through the entire thing again so I'll be ready for it. I'm 52, now, by the way.

Hope this helps; let me know either way.

I have been going to ITT Tech for 4 quarters now. I have read over most of the reviews on here. I was one of the ones that had a full time job with long hours and was worried about being stuck in such a position for a long time. (backbreaking work)

I agree with some of the people on here that say it is somewhat easy to get an "A. I have witnessed instructors saying that the participation grade is the majority of the weight.

I think in some way that it comes down to how much effort that people put into it. What I mean is, that you have to wade through a lot to find what your niche is. For example, I was not all that into 3DSMAX, but I love the image manipulation programs. (PS,AI,FL) Thats what you will attach onto and start the personal quest for knowledge. I have been to the bookstore many times looking for books to pay for out of my own pocket to enhance my skills. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I do think some of the instructors could be a little better at their class. I found out in many cases (true story) that instructors were having to learn the course material weeks before having to teach it. I do think that this is unfair, not only to students, but to the instructors as well.

ITT is not a bad school, but I do think that it needs a little direction sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I know I have talked about some of the instructors badly, but at the same time, I have met some instructors that have truly changed my life. When you find these instructors, those are the ones you need to connect with and try to learn all you can from them. If possible, look at your course schedule and get as many classes as you can from them. I have not been to any other colleges, but i believe that they are the same way, that you have to wade through some crap to get the the classes that you can connect with.

On the expense side, I do think that it is a little pricey. I mean 90,000 is a lot of money, but then again, most of the fields that you can go into when you graduate pay around 75K-90K a year. So if you look at it that way, I guess it makes sense. I kind of agree with what the guy said, it is what you make it. I talked to one of my instructors about not feeling that I was getting what I am paying for, and he told me that they provide a starting point for your education. that the rest is up to you. I think that a lot of the people complaining on here are the same people that sit in the back of class and text on their phones while the instructors are explaining things.I really believe that what you do outside of class is where you learn. They provide the direction. Before I started at ITT, I knew nothing of any of these programs. I had no idea of how to do anything in Adobe Creative Suite, or 3DSMAX. But now I can create things, sometimes extraordinary things and even surprise myself.

All-in-all, I think that it is a little pricey, but worth it if you are going to put forth the effort to learn. Look for the good instructors, as they are the ones you will learn the most from. You have to look at it like this, the instructor might be know all there is to know about the subject, but not be able to relay that info to others very well. Oh, and ask a crapload of questions if you don't understand something. I mean after all, you are paying for it. lol

Why would the US gov. pay for 36000 of my tuition if the school is what you say it is? My loans will only be 6200 when I graduate. If the school was a scam the gov. would not have given me the grants to go. Plain and simple. You people that are disgracing ITT must not live in an area where there are jobs. I have already been hired by csx transportation the day I graduate.

I just got done reading a few of the "CONS" of ITT Tech. I am so sorry that so many of you are having such horrible experiences. I attend a wonderful campus. I have teachers that are VERY well educated. I had 2 teachers that had Master's Degrees, and all of the teachers have college degrees! I have to study with my courses, I don't get to "SKATE" through. I am in the Criminal Justice program, and I was told by several different police departments and companies that I have applied to, that they would offer an Itt student a job, because we have concentration in our field, and not "extra" classes that don't prepare you for your field. As far as Loans!!! Touchy subject-- I know. A school can never tell you how much your loan repayments are going to be...they can't even estimate. It all depends on are they government loans? Bank loans? Intrest free loans? Your intrest rates?Due to your credit, your loan payment can be out of this world. It is all based on your credit scores! What people don't understand is that you can defer out loans every 6 months til you find a job. Call and deal with it! Don't complain about the price when you are done and the bills start coming in...You knew from the start how much it was going to COST----DEAL WITH IT!!! And the complaint that ITT is to help you get a job? REALLY?? Every college I went to never helped me find a job. If you can't find a job, you aren't looking hard enough. I have had several job offers and a wonderful summer intership offer at a Coroner's office, in another state! Six weeks PAID. I am not depending on Itt to help me with anything. The ladies and gentalmen in that office are to help assist you in your quest to find a "worthy" job. I had 4 of my friends graduate last semester, three graduated with a jobs that paid between $17.98 hr. (dispatcher) and Court Runner at the local court house at $22.00hr, and with in 2 months the last girl had a job with the Department of Elections in the county making 21.50. The jobs are out there, get off your butt and look, don't depend on anyone!!!

This is a wonderful college, and would recommend it to anyone!!!

ITT Tech Graduate Student went to major univ and community college for other degrees

School recommended by Bart Asher on February 22, 2010

I completed my MBA through ITT-Tech's online MBA program with highest honors. I have a BS in Accounting from Univ Missouri St. Louis and a Associte Degree in Data Processing from Meramec Community College, so I have been to all the possible types of colleges.

I compared the classes in ITTs program to other online programs and those offered at major universities and the IIT program followed very closing to them. In some instances the classes had the same titles.

ITT cost for the MBA program was not the cheapest but not the most expensive either.

I found that all but one of my instructors were very good and most had doctorates in the field they were teaching.

The class homework was challenging and the amount of time to complete it was significant. Typically, each week you will read 30 - 40 pages from the text, go through an online lecture (1 hour), complete 3-5 hours of assignments, take one timed test and contribute to the online discussion groups. This is too be expected as the classes were shorter than those at other institutions and had to cover a significant amount of material.

I feel that I learned a great deal from the majority of the classes and would do it again.

Also, just because you are an online student does not mean you don't get to be involved in graduation.

PS My son has completed his associate degree and is working on his BS at ITT and he is definately learning a lot.

Again, he has had some very good teachers and some very weak ones. But I found this when I went to UMSL and the community college, it just means as a student you need to work harder.

Nothing worth having or learning comes free or without work, get used to it kids.

ITT is NOT a college; it is a Technical Institute....

School not recommended by G. Gomez on February 18, 2010

I would not recommend this place to any family, friends, or anyone else who wants to get an education. Yes, you can learn there. Yes, you can get a 'degree', but it is not a 'college' degree. You are attending a technical institute which has a poor reputation, and is concerned more about attendance and enrollment than quality of education.

I was an instructor there, and although there were people there to learn, the majority of the students just wanted to coast through, get their 'degree' and get the job that ITT was promising to help them find.

ITT is nationally accredited, not regionally like traditional colleges and universities.

Finally, your tuition is about $45,000.00 for an associates and $90,000.00 for a bachelors.

Good luck!

Like anything: It is only as good as you make it!

School recommended by Mike on February 01, 2010

ITT Technical Institute is a good school. Like any school it is only as good as you make it with your effort. Getting a Bachelor Degree from nothing takes 4-years of year around school. This is a normal length of a Bachelor degree. The biggest benefits are: * The schedule of classes for the working person. * Each class is geared toward the application of skills in the "real," professional world.

Class: 2003-2007 (2x Valedictorian) Degree: B.S. Information Systems Security Degree: A.S. Computer Networking Systems Campus: West Covina, CA -> San Dimas, CA Student Loans Bill (per month): $1,124.78 Would I do it all over again? YES! (all while working 40+ hours a week)

Current Position: International Engineer Salary: (More than enough) Company: Wont name but you all know it.

PERSONAL INSIGHTS (what got my through the hard times): * Education is acquired by seeking knowledge. * "School" is just a tool. Use the tool to acquire knowledge and create your opportunity. * All schools are businesses (even public). * You must embrace what you desire as a career. This means learning all the time - not just when in class. Learning does not stop when you leave class. * You want the dream job then make yourself worthy by working hard all the time to gain that edge.

THE SCHOOL: ITT-Tech is, as many others here have been stating, only as good as you make it. People need to understand that school takes work. You get out only what effort you put in (and the money is just the entry fee, from there you must work hard). This is school: you aren't there for grades - you're there to learn and become more intelligent.

My experience with the teaching staff was just like any other school: Great teachers, horrible ones, and everything inbetween.

THE BAD: One teacher was so bad (my second quarter) that I ended up writing the material for the class starting on the second class - a subject I was there to learn about as this was my first time dealing with this subject (VB). Needless to say he was eventually removed (post course) once we let the administration know. How did I learn in that class? I took the concept home and began learning and coding.

THE GREAT: One teacher in particular was so knowledgeable and incredible at teaching that he made us work so hard, so stressed about the projects and material we'd practically cry. But in the end we learned more in a single class with him than in years of high school and all of that stayed with us (course = 12, all day, classes).

The original books at this school (NIIT) changed during my time at ITT. We were fed these horrible NIIT books for awhile but eventually we explained to the teachers and the administration that they needed to change. The teachers knew these books were bad but when the students complained they listened. The following year we had 1 NIIT book and the rest were industry standard, top-of-the-market texts that you would spend $50-$150+ a piece at a book store.

The administration was back and forth but ultimately they removed the bad personnel and replaced them with people that worked for us, the students. In the end the school seemed to run more smoothly, the text books were top notch (kept the books), the teachers were great, and the overall education experience was much better. This all reflects on the administration's job to adhere to the demands of their students.

UNDERSTAND YOUR COURSE: The fields being taught are not "hand-me" fields. These fields require you to work hard everyday, think on your own everyday, think out of the box everyday, work alone under pressure, and so much more. Preparation for these types of environments can't be learned in school. This behaviour and skill-set must created by the individual and practiced to the point of a natural disposition.

Let the material learned in class stimulate your curiosity and drive you to expand that knowledge when you leave class. Educating yourself outside of class is a MUST!

THE PROBLEM WITH ITT-TECH: Speaking from experience...ITT-Tech's demographic creates their problem. The majority of their students tend to be underachievers and/or people who are not sure what they want. These "students" may not have been good in school all their lives. They may not understand how to achieve goals through hard work. They tend to want things the easiest way possible. And if they don't get what they feel their entitled to they complain (hence the negative comments).

I started my Associate Degree with 34 students and finished with 7. I continued to my Bachelor Degree with 25 students and finished with 12. Think about these things.

ITT-Tech does not advertise or incentivize toward the overachievers that we associate with schools like State Universities and Ivy League schools. The market for those students is huge and competitive. ITT does not normally get that same calibre of student.

ITT is a business that found their niche in offering education to people whose lives aren't working out as they planned, if they had/have a plan at all. While this is both great for business and for new education opportunities for people, it also creates their problem of a rather unmotivated student population. This isn't to say that all the students are like this. I have retained friendships with some amazingly gifted people that I had the privilege of attending 4 years of classes with.

IN THE END: You make the decision. This school is a school used to educate. Getting educated is a choice of the student, not the school. Voice your frustrations with any establishment you're paying to use - it is your right and things will get done.

Courses where I had the best teachers: * Project Management Courses * Linux/Advanced Linux Courses * Statistics Course * Trig/Calc Course * Ethics/Philosophy Course * "Information Security" Courses * Business Communication Courses * Computer Forensic Course

--Mike (excuse spelling/grammer as I wrote this in a bit of a rush)

MY EXPERIENCE: I've been at ITT for nearly 3 quarters now. For the most part it has been a joke. Classes are stupidly easy. I don't see how anyone gets anything less than an A. First quarter I had a class named something along the lines of Strategies for the Business Professional or some such misleading name. Anyway, the class usually consisted of going to Facebook and other websites while the Instructor sat around talking about crap that had absolutely no relevance to class. Seriously, we had 1 assignment to turn into him a week, and he couldn't even keep up with that. I remember having to complain to him several times near the end of the quarter over missing assignments. It was a god awful mess.

The school has the tools necessary to be so much better than it is, but the main problem is with the instructors. They just don't care about you or the curriculum. Next quarter I should start learning about animations and such. If things continue to be God awful then I won't be staying. I strongly advise anyone that's interested in this school to search elsewhere for a college. This one is not worth the money you will be forking out.

Overall Experience: Very poor

Simply put, this school is not worth the money you pay. Cut the price down to 1/3 of what it is and MAYBE it would be worth it, but you would still have a useless degree that wouldn't transfer to any sort of decent college or university...

hi i feel like itt isn't that bad. no other community college or university is going to help someone gain employment after graduating no matter how much tuition was paid. so why expect itt to do it. itt is the only school in michigan that allows someone to take the prerequsities for the nursing program in the actual program. most schools require you jump through a million hoops to get into a nursing program. what i suggest is that every student should be doing their homework on a school before you decide to attend. sometimes we have to take responsibility and not fault others.

Well first off I have been out of school for about 3yrs. I went to ITT because they offered a C.J. program most of instructors seem to be very caring most don't even talk about what the course is about so it's a hit and miss. Several students have been caught cheating and fighting they have done nothing about it. The program chair is a joke he act's like he cares about your concerns and that he'll take care of it, never happens. My advice is look more closely before signing that piece of paper committing yourself to ITT there are better schools out there!!!

They were all able to go out into the working world and obtain great paying jobs with well known respectable companies. ITT Tech did not help them with job placement but with their own determination and hard work they are making their degree's from ITT Tech work for them. And are doing damn well too.

I went to ITT Tech a few years back. My degree was relatively new, although nothing out of the ordinary in terms of what a technical school should be offering. I can agree that the books are outdated. We did complain to the dean and we did get new course books (legitimate ones picked by the professor) for one semester. However the NIIT books continued thereafter. I was one of the 3 people that made it through the course for my specific degree and while it wasn't necessarily hard (having done this my whole life) you definitely need to apply yourself to succeed, just like any college. You cannot just cruise through like it's high school. There are a number of reasons I wouldn't ever recommend them. * Shady practices in terms of student loans -- this is my own fault for not looking carefully, but that doesn't excuse them either. A $600 school loan bill is obscene and that's more than people pay for rent and mortgages where I live -- and is likely out of reach for many graduates for years. * They claim they have experienced professionals teaching -- which they do, but experience is a subjective term and most of the time the person teaching had no knowledge of the course material, simply they've worked in the tech sector before. * Draconian attendance policy that was mandated because of the 'state'. Some of us have jobs and do get sick. I came down with mono for a month and kept up with school work, and managed to perform wonderfully in labs and tests. I was dropped from the semester because my career portfolio teacher didn't like my attendance. They were unable to produce said mandate. * Unhelpful career placement. I made $12 an hour at a job before ITT. I was offered a position after graduation for $9 an hour and the schedule they wanted me to work was unacceptable even for a doctor. I had to look for work myself. * Course material becomes quickly outdated. We weren't allowed to use our knowledge learned in the classes to expand and were quickly tethered down to what was expected of us for our final project. We were expected to use outdated technology by almost 10 years to produce it. * Textbooks. Not only were the textbooks overpriced the subject matter they contained was usually wrong, inaccurate, or even incomplete. Hopefully my experience and warning helps you make your decision, but ultimately that's up for you all to decide what you need from the school and your degree. We did get lucky and get a professor who thought it was his duty to teach us everything and our course material was directly from him, and teaching us through workshops outside of class. I wish all future students good luck!

You said:

Being jealous because you studied hard and others didn't but got the same grade as you is completely childish! Your concerns are misplaced, you should be worried about what YOU get out of the programs.

So you would not mind then, if none of your classmates studied for some midterm exam and scored so low that the professor curved the grades so that the grade of A started with scores of 65, while you worked very hard and got 100, but got no better grade for having done this work?

Under normal circumstances, I don't care if my classmates learn or not.

But the point when things like this become my business is when, for instance, I am applying for a paid internship where only a few people can apply, and the requirement is grade B or higher in the same class.

I would not want people competing with me who just did not earn the grade required for the internship, when I worked to the point of exhaustion getting that grade.

When you go to get information on the school they just rush you to sign the paper. And none of the credits are good for other colleges. So do your homework, and read it all over the net that ITT is a scam. Oh and they say they will help get you a job but it's a lie - they send you on jobs that are not even on the career you're taking.

Getting a degree super fast is not worth it if it does not hold as much weight as a degree from a regular college.

The professors at ITT may very well be the best in their field, perhaps they retired from the workplace just a few hours before going into the classroom.

But in real life, your qualifications are only as good as the paper they are written on, and if employers don't recognize the paper, than you don't officially have any knowledge or skills in your field of study.

I graduated from ITT Tech in Arnold MO back in December of 05' exactly 4 years ago. I was in my career field one year into my CADD degree. Also at the top of my class. My instructer was very knoledgable in the field and worked great with all the students. The classes were very direct and fast paced. I was head of my class and got in my field because I had already learned everything they were teaching me in high school for FREE!

The company I started working for could care less if I had a degree as long as I knew what I was doing. Experience is worth more than any degree. My 2yr degree cost most of my class $32k. I was in their P.I.E. program so I paid a little less.

I've been in the field for 4 years now and doing great. I dont want to be a drafter anymore. I want to further my education and move up. ITT dont offer anything but a B.S. in video games or construction management for me. My credits dont transfer to ANYWHERE that offers the course I want to take. I did try to go back for CM but the instructor made very clear no late work would be accepted at all and it was way too fast paced for me to take in.

I would STRONGLY recommend going to a community college or university for your degree. The agency I worked with to find my job told me the B.S. part of the CM degree didn't stand for a level of education if ya catch my drift. Dont feed into their recruiters either! Do your own research on what they're SELLING you. I promise they will lie to your face and not care at all about you! They told me I can drop my class 2 weeks into the program and not owe anything. I did that with CM and now owe $4k to Salle Mae.

I will answer any question you have about my experience at ITT you have. You can send me any question only about my experience or sugguestions with ITT to stl_double_b@hotmail.com I am not bitter towards them. I just know I would have a better career if I had went to a community college rather than them. Wouldn't have cost near as much, would have gotten the same degree and my credits would transfer somewhere.
