What is library technology?

Library and information science (LIS) is the study of organizational issues related to libraries and information databases. This includes academic studies regarding how library resources are used, how people interact with library systems, and theory surrounding how data is organized. Library and information scientists are responsible for the design and execution of the entire data-retrieval process in both traditional libraries and online databases. Thus, while the focus of library and information science is rather limited, the range of possible careers within LIS is quite large.

Therefore, a variety of different opportunities exist for individuals of different academic backgrounds. Areas of opportunity for librarians typically include elementary and secondary schools, community colleges and universities, corporate libraries, archives, and public libraries. Librarians familiar with online repositories of information like journal article databases and search engine technology tend to be more desirable employees in today's market than their more traditionally-skilled colleagues.

Qualifications vary depending on the desired career level. Those interested in managing smaller local libraries may only need a bachelor's degree, but larger municipal and university libraries will likely require some level of graduate study. While funding for libraries may fluctuate somewhat with economic conditions, demand for librarians remains fairly steady. Graduates should not encounter too much difficulty finding an entry level position. With that said, high-level positions are extremely difficult to come by, and competition is fiercest at top institutions.
