Psychology Major

By Sarenda Flanigan - Covington GA on August 20, 2008

I have had a very good experience at Liberty University. I think it is the school to pick if you have been out of school for more than an couple of years. I have always been able to get answers to any problems I have encountered which were not real problems. The financial aid dept, acadmeic advising and professors have been very helpful. I plan on graduating soon and continuing at liberty to get my Masters in marriage and family therapy.

Wanted to let everyone know that before you apply to Liberty Univ. make sure you don't have to complete any classes on campus if you are looking at online programs. We are military and stationed overseas, I applied and paid $50 to have my transcripts sent, only to find out that in order to complete the degree you must do 3 classes on campus. If you are military looking to apply make sure you double check. I even spoke to a representative before applying and they made no mention for one, and two when I asked if this degree was strictly on line they said "yes". Need less to say, 5 weeks later when I go to finish the paperwork, I find out that it isn't and am not sure I can apply, for in the military we know we don't always get stationed where we want to. Just keep this in mind if you are military and double check you don't have to take any courses on campus. Good luck to you all!!

LU Psychology vs Christian Counselor

By JKS - Long Island on June 25, 2008

I must agree with the first review, Liberty's Psychology department uses very secular books, however as you move on they add DVDs with a Christian perspective that adds to the curriculum. Christian Counseling is new to LU and is a wonderful addition--I am switching from a Psyc to BCOU degree. Liberty University is a great experience I would not have gone any other way. Professors are attentive, classes are active and challenging. Interaction with classmates is expected and adds so much to the class and learning.

Liberty

As someone without a religious background, I was worried about taking classes at Liberty.. but they were local and offered a great DLP program so I applied. The DLP program is exceptional and I am finding it to be quite intellectually challanging.

As a psychology major I have found the classes and texts used in DLP to be secular and science-based... there are some papers that are asked for from a christian perspective, but the learning (in DLP) leans more toward secular flavor, and the texts are strictly secular (Psychology 8ed and The Developing Person Through the Lifespan, 6ed both by Worth Publishers).

There are some religious based classes that are required.. but I found them to be interesting and in depth and informative... The professors are prompt and very helpful in their replies.. the DLP format is easy and efficient.. I have found the classes to be very challanging, and they are more apt to require critical thinking over memorization.

As a DLP student I recommend LU DLP to anyone regardless of whether they are Christian or not.. Cost is low. $250 a credit hour and I have been given all the financial aid that I needed. The DLP classes are intensive as they are in a 8 week format, and self discipline.

LU first and foremost just to clarify and be real about the situation is a private and very conservative institution that prides itself around a Christian environment.

This school has morals which means your not going to catch any parties with heavy drinking going on around campus which can be a good thing for those looking for a clean, secure, and serene campus life. This can be a hassle for those that see fun as drinking intensively, partying hard, and etc. There are rules such as a dress code (which honestly is changing like everyday because I've wore sweat pants, tshirts, and everything to class), curfew(which is like 12:30 or 1:00....sounds bad but considering your in Virginia the only thing open at this time is a walmart and a Sheetz), and other minor rules.

As far as academics is concerned this school accepts pretty much anyone from high school with a decent GPA and SAT score which means this is no Harvard but at the same time I have met many people that have chose this university over schools like Virginia Tech and George Mason just to name a few. The school still manages to rank nationally in many areas of academics even though they have a very high acceptance rank.

My experience at LU has been a one of personal growth. This school has helped me grow tremendously mentally and spiritually. I have met some of the greatest friends I could ever ask for my first year. When I look back on how the faculty and institution has helped me to this point, I feel special as a student. Yes, there are negatives at this school but the good definitely outweighs the bad. Reality is no school is perfect, a school cant possibly please every person on the planet.

But if you are looking for a institution that truly cares about you as a student, provides great memories, a diverse student body, and a place where you can truly grow as a person spiritually and mentally then this is the place for you.

Liberty University is a school that has a lot going for it, yet its teachers and administration seem to think it is the end-all, “world's most exciting university”, which is just not true. It's a decent school, good Psychology program with good teachers. Seriously consider before you go to LU whether or not there is a better option for you. I personally wish I had looked at other options first, myself- however I would not change my decision to attend Liberty.
