<info>

Engineers envision, design, create and test many of the gadgets and machines in the world today.

At a minimum, a bachelor's degree is needed to get a job as an engineer.

Engineers can make a wide range of salaries, from $37,000 to over $100,000 a year.

 What do workers in general engineering do?

In a world full of things, there has to be someone out there who makes stuff. To say it in the simplest way, this is what engineers do. Basically, engineers are problem-solvers. They put scientific knowledge to practical use, applying science and math to solve problems creatively. There are many different types of engineers, all of which have a different specialty and working environment. Some work in laboratories, industrial plants, or construction sites where they inspect, supervise or solve on-site problems. Others work in an office most of the time, and a few travel to plants or construction sites. The many different fields of engineering include, but are not limited to, technology engineering, civil engineering, aeronautical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering and automotive engineering. If you're a person who likes to figure out how things work, and you like to find out ways to make things work better, engineering has a wide number of options for you.

What kind of degree is needed to work as a general engineer?

In order to even get your foot in the door of the engineering field, you'll need at least a bachelor's degree from a school that's recommended by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, or ABET. Engineering can be a very fun field, but it takes a lot of training to be able to function even at an entry level engineering job. Most engineers go on to get a master's degree or Ph.D. in order to become more specialized and more marketable in the career field.

What career opportunities are available for someone with a degree in general engineering?

All the specialized engineering fields are way too numerous to name. You can pretty much guarantee that if you like the idea of creating and improving the way things work, you can find a field of engineering that is interesting to you. From an agricultural engineer who helps design ways to protect the environment, to a mechanical engineer who designs cars; there are many way to use engineering skills.

How much money does an engineer make?

The sub-fields within the field of engineering all vary in salary, but the very broad range of yearly salaries made is between $37,000 and $120,000. The level of education an engineer has, the field of engineering, and the experience in the work force are the main reasons for the dramatic differences between salaries.
