Financial Aid Planning Guide
Do Your Research
The first step toward planning for any educational path is doing research. It is important to know what specific programs appeal to you so that you select an area of study that reflects your interests. Once you have picked a few programs that may fit your goals and lifestyle, you can start to compare the pros and cons of each.
Consider Your Options
Good planning always includes comparing the many different educational options out there. How would you know that you selected the best program if you haven`t explored the other options? During this analysis, there will likely be a number of key program attributes that will help you decide which route to take. This is also an important time to look specifically at the cost of each program; you may find that expenses prohibit the programs that you choose to pursue. In the end, the hope is that you will find a program that is in sync with both your financial capability and your future aspirations.
Plan Ahead
After you have selected a program, the next step is to sit down and figure out what the entire experience will cost. This does not just include tuition. It also reflects your cost of living, books, and transportation. Add everything up and then you will have a fairly accurate representation of your financial expenses. Refer to our Financing Your Education resource pages for more information on how to manage college costs.
Follow a Budget
The last step toward paying for college is creating a budget. One tip: create a weekly or monthly budget that is realistic and manageable; it is much easier to create a budget than to stick to a budget. For example, it is very hard to eat on $10 a month although it sounds like a novel idea in theory. If you can create a budget that is livable, then you will have much more success in the process of paying for school.
