Formal training can be a great asset to workers in film making and television production, but experience, talent, creativity, and professionalism usually are the most important factors in getting a job. Most professionals in this field get started doing smaller pieces like documentary films, commercials or industrial films. If you want to be an actor, practice in any sort of performance skill, such as singing, dancing, improv, and public speaking can help. Directors and producers usually begin on their own small projects and learn through experience and schooling. If film and television management is of interest, usually a 2 year degree and a few years of experience in the industry can open doors. Screen writers usually have at least a bachelor's degree, but it's not necessarily required.
