• Equipment Design and Manufacturing: If you decide to specialize in equipment design, you will be utilizing the latest technologies to make faster, quieter, and more efficient equipment to install in watercraft. In manufacturing, you will learn to deal with the complexities of a certain brand of watercraft. 
• Boat Building: With this specialization, you will be able to turn a few parts into a vehicle that can transport people from one location to another via a body of water.

There are no formal education requirements for marine mechanics. Employers offer extensive on-the-job training for marine mechanics, which makes any education beyond high school optional. In fact, there are a number of practicing marine mechanics that have not completed any degree of college education; however, if you are looking to build your reputation as an accomplished and trained marine mechanic who is able to keep up with the latest advancements in watercraft, you should look into achieving a certification. Various certification courses for marine technology are offered by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). However, these certification programs are designed for those who have already have spent some time working as a marine mechanic. The assessment may be too advanced for someone just starting out in the field.

The basic certification exam will assess your technical knowledge of air conditioning and refrigeration systems, diesel engines, gasoline engines, composite boat building, marine electrical systems, and marine corrosion. (ABYC) Fortunately, the ABYC offers numerous certification courses, many of which can be taken online. Once you achieve certification, it will not be valid forever. Five years after passing the first ABYC certification exam, you must pass a recertification test to prove that you have not lost valuable knowledge. This test is two hours in length and can be completed from any computer.

Over the course of an online program for marine mechanics, you can expect to take classes on troubleshooting, electrical and ignition systems of watercraft, fuel and lube systems, rigging for watercraft, four- and two-stroke outboard engines, engine overhaul procedures, making diagnoses of damaged machinery, and more. As a marine mechanic, you will be responsible for mastering an all-encompassing knowledge base because doing so will help prepare you for problems of varying degrees of severity that you will encounter during your work.

Because the vast majority of work for marine mechanics is hands-on, online programs will likely require you to complete some degree of on-site training to demonstrate that you can master the mechanical skills that are needed to be successful. This is not the case for all schools, but for many, you will be required to work a certain number of hours at a marine repair shop before you can graduate. Those schools that do not have any on-site training requirements expect that you have already obtained real-world experience serving as a marine mechanic on your own. Before you choose a school for marine mechanics, you should look closely at the description of the program to see whether or not on-site training is required.

The field of aviation technology is diverse in nature, as some go on to become pilots while others choose to inspect and repair aircraft.
• Autobody & Collision Repair: With this degree, you will be able to work as an auto mechanic. You will be responsible for diagnosing problems, removing damaged machinery, and repairing new parts.
• Motorcycle Mechanic: Many people are unaware of the significant differences between any two motorcycles. With this degree, you will learn to build and repair many makes and models of motorcycles, taking all of these differences into account.
• Diesel Mechanic: As a diesel mechanic, you will restrict your repair work to vehicles containing diesel engines. Typically, these engines tend to be found in buses, locomotives, and trucks.
