When a text is able to withstand two thousand years of human existence and continues to carry influence in the present day, the significance of that text is evident. A career in biblical studies examines this influential text in a variety of fashions. Biblical studies careers range from clergy and other religious-affiliated occupations to educational, writing, and research jobs. As biblical representations are enacted in highly commercialized forms, biblical studies scholars can help interpret and clarify the stories for those who wish to present them in contemporary movies. A career in biblical studies can instill spirituality, understanding of the impact of ancient text on past and present culture, comprehension of Christian and Jewish thoughts on God, and intrigue with ancient texts.

The impact of the Bible is revealed in many Western cultural practices. A career in biblical studies explores just how influential the Bible is on cultures that have been directly and indirectly affected. History and literature mingle to create a career that is interdisciplinary. Along with history and literature, other subjects of biblical studies includes philosophy, linguistics, psychology, English, and world religions.

Education & Certification Requirements

Like with many careers, there are a multitude of job opportunities in any biblical studies degree. A degree in biblical studies can be pursued to begin a career, provide further knowledge in a place of employment, advance a current job, or change from one place of employment to a career that has been desired by an individual.

An associate degree supplies a foundational knowledge of biblical studies. With this degree, students are introduced to the theoretical concepts of biblical studies with fields of study like history, religion, and philosophy explored. Associate degrees can be obtained at Bible colleges and universities as well as at community colleges and other higher educational facilities that offer two-year degrees.

Along with Bible colleges, biblical studies can be studied at public colleges and universities for a bachelor's degree. Additional focus areas of studies for a bachelor's degree in biblical studies includes psychology, archaeology, English, and linguistics. Many areas of biblical studies can be specialized when obtaining a bachelor's degree. Students begin to determine whether they are seeking biblical studies for religious reasons, analytical research, applied study, or to educate others on biblical studies.

Most clergy and professors of biblical studies should receive a master's degree at a minimum. For clergy and other religious careers, students learn how to assist members of the religious sect with moral and spiritual guidance. Counseling and social awareness in the community are centered in master's degree programs for religious workers. A master's degree program for those wanting to enter the educational realm of biblical studies will incorporate a number of texts where history, language, and contemporary ideologies are juxtaposed with  biblical studies. Those interested in biblical studies will apply precise skills like archaeology to refine comprehension and techniques through a master's degree.

Doctoral degrees assist in biblical studies careers where an individual would like to be the head of religious organizations or research the most cutting-edge ideas on biblical studies, such as in archaeology or in other higher educational areas.

While some higher education institutions offer certification with an associate degree, many master's degree programs also offer certification. Most clergy and religiously affiliated organizations require certification in the religious group an individual plans to be employed with. (BLS)

Related Careers

The assessment and study of humans and religion can be applied to a diverse number of other careers. Two of those careers include lawyers and social workers.

Many lawyers will major in biblical studies and other master's degree programs that have a religious element to the workload. Lawyers utilize the same skills of assessing human behavior and reaction to a variety of factors in biblical studies that they can later apply in law school and in the courtroom once they begin working in their profession of choice. Lawyers and religious careers are similar because both counsel others and then provide recommendations based off of that consultation.

Social workers are in the same line as many religious workers because they perform the task of helping others with life-changing issues and decisions. By providing solutions, counseling, and alternatives to negative behaviors, social workers provide a service that is absolutely crucial for hospitals, schools, nonprofit agencies, and government agencies.
