The education requirements for becoming a clinical psychologist are quite extensive. Most states require practicing clinical psychologists to have at least a doctoral degree, either a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree. These five-year-long degrees require students to complete either original research into an area of psychology, or various practical patient examinations and diagnoses. The master's degree in clinical psychology is not usually sufficient for independent clinical practice. It can be a good way for individuals to see if they are interested in completing the PhD program; master's degree holders can generally complete the PhD in an accelerated time frame. Clinical psychologists offering any type of direct patient care must have a state-issued license. These licenses are granted to individuals who possess a doctorate in clinical psychology, and who have completed one to two years of postgraduate professional experience. All states also require licensure applicants to complete a standardized test.

Clinical psychologists can also pursue voluntary credentials offered by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). The ABPP offers voluntary certifications in 13 areas, such as forensic psychology and clinical neuropsychology.
