A bachelor's degree in applied or clinical psychology introduces students to the basic psychological principles involved in patient evaluation. Students learn about theories of psychological development, as well as skills for interviewing and helping patients. In most states, the bachelor's degree is not sufficient to become a licensed therapist, although graduates may become substance abuse counselors, child advocates, or direct-service social workers. The master's degree in clinical psychology is the usual minimum requirement for earning a therapist license. Master's students spend time outside the classroom treating patients under the guidance of experienced therapists. Clinical psychology doctorates take four to six years to complete and require at least a year-long internship in a psychology treatment setting.
