Best Careers during a Recession

The stormy economic forecast, while hardly foreshadowing a crisis like the Great Depression, threatens to raise America’s historically stable unemployment rate

It’s no secret that the U.S. economy has not been the healthiest the last few years. Homes aren’t selling, good jobs are hard to come by, other jobs are being cut and salary increases are at a near standstill. For those looking for jobs during a recession, times can be tough. The general rule is that the best career during a recession is the one you already have – do whatever you can to protect your job and wait out the hard times.

If, however, you find yourself suddenly unemployed, there are certain sectors which are still hiring at a relatively normal rate. If you aren’t qualified for these sectors, think about a new degree. Many jobs in these areas can be trained for in less than one year. The Healthcare Industry is a great place to look for work. People are always going to get sick, so jobs in this industry are secure. Not trained in this field yet? Try looking into training to be a Medical Assistant or even a Billing and Coding Specialist, both of which can be trained for relatively quickly.

The Energy and Utilities sector is another top career during a recession – even though people may be cutting back on energy costs to save money, companies are also hiring professionals to help them provide the public with more efficient forms of energy. Education is a highly stable career field as well. Kids need teachers regardless of how the economy is doing, and many adults choose to go back to school to make themselves more competitive when good jobs are hard to come by.

Public Safety is also a good career choice during recessions. Those working as police officers, security guards and firemen get laid off only rarely, so this is a pretty secure job market as well. Finally, if you’re in the Food industry, whether you make your living as a chef, a grocer or a baker, the fact remains that people need to eat, no matter how the economy is doing. High-end restaurants might take a hit, but those with careers in places like grocery stores should not have to worry about their jobs. Debt Management, Beauty and Health and Consulting all round out a list of careers which are safe bets when the economy becomes dicey.

  1. Its strange, unemployment stats are up but there are still so many high paying jobs posted on employment sites
There still seems to be a strond demand for professional talent.

  2. I’m seeing this problem head on at my job. I work at a nursing home with a bunch of RNs and CNAs, and many of them have had to turn to these jobs because they couldn’t find anything else. One was even a Marketing Consultant before she got laid off and had to go back to school for nursing. Good article.
