Earning a bachelor's in psychology is a good basis for getting a foot into the door of an entry-level position in the field of social work. It can also be used in many non-related fields. Many psychology graduates go on to work in advertising, business, medicine, and teaching. For those students interested in a professional psychology career as a psychologist, therapist, or psychological analyst, graduate training is typically required. Social Work and Human Services professions generally afford greater freedom and maneuverability to Psychology graduates who pursue a specialized Master or Doctorate Degree.

 <info>

Many graduates with a bachelor's in psychology find entry level positions in social service agencies, and the business world.

Most jobs in the field of psychology require a more advanced degree, beyond a bachelor's degree.

Students can choose between a bachelor's of art in psychology (B.A) degree or a bachelor's of science psychology (B.S.) degree.

How does one earn a bachelor's in psychology?

A bachelor's degree in psychology is a four year degree offered through many colleges and universities. Usually within the first two years of school a student chooses to major in psychology. Most universities offer a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.), with a major in psychology. The difference between these two degrees is that the B.S. degree requires more science credits for graduation. Usually a bachelor's degree in psychology is the gateway into graduate school, as many psychology jobs require a master's or doctoral degree.

What career opportunities are available for someone with a bachelor's in psychology?

Earning a bachelor's in psychology opens the door for many, many different career paths. If becoming a "psychologist" is the goal, a bachelor's degree is the first step to achievement. However, earning a master's degree or PhD is required to be considered a professional psychologist. With a bachelor's alone, though, many graduates are finding very promising careers in the field of psychology. Many with a bachelor's in psychology find prosperous positions in the social services, human resources, computer interface design, paralegal field, marketing and sales. It's recommended that, along with the required psychology classes for graduation, students should take two or more courses in economics, business administration, personnel administration, marketing, consumer education, journalism, speech, communications, English, biology, statistics, computer science, sociology, and social work. These courses will give a broad background to possible skills needed for work in many types of psychology-related fields. Also, getting some exposure to psychological testing, interview techniques and research design is also helpful for those who want to get experience in a psychology lab and eventually apply for graduate school.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of earning a bachelor's in psychology online?

Convenience is the main reason for choosing to take courses online. Also, online learning allows the student to use the time put into the class more efficiently; there is no commuting, no annoying personalities to deal with, and no wasted class-time moments. The costs of taking courses online include a computer, Internet access, books and the price of the course itself, but these things are usually required for traditional courses anyway. Though not all online courses are cheaper than traditional courses, a 2003 independent study found that most certification or degrees online were almost 75% less expensive than attending class at a traditional university.

In the field of psychology specifically, the advantages are the same as any other program, but the disadvantages can be seen as huge road blocks in the job hunt. Many psychology careers require research experience and the recommendations of professors at a university. In an online program, there is little to no opportunity for exposure to this university level research environment. Students with a psychology degree from a traditional, accredited university will most likely be chosen for opportunities in the workforce or graduate programs, over those who completed a degree online. Then again, as online courses become more mainstream, and the stereotypes of online degrees lessen, the playing field will likely be leveled out a bit.
