<info>

Students who are interested in working in this field need to complete, at least, 2 years of specialized training.

Possible careers in this field include aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics, service technicians, aviation engineers, Aircraft pilots, and air traffic controllers.

Most employers will hire only those applicants who are certified.

 What is aviation technology?

Aviation technology focuses on the engineering and maintenance of basically any flying vehicle. This field encompases airplanes, helicopters, balloons, and air ships, just to name a few. From designing and engineering flying machines, to maintaining them, professionals in this field do a range of jobs. As technology advances, aviation technology involves more and more computerized equipment. Those interested in the aviation industry can choose to specialize in areas such as aeronautical technology, aviation management, and professional flight.

What are the requirements for getting into the aviation technology field?

Students who are interested in working in this field need to complete, at least, 2 years of specialized training. Most programs are part of a community college program, while others are part of a technical degree program. Whatever program you choose, make sure it is accredited and will provide you with the skills needed to earn the needed certifications for work in this field. After completing a program, some graduates get jobs as engineering technicians, while others continue their education at 4-year colleges. Four year programs in colleges and universities usually do not offer engineering technician training, but do offer a more theoretical engineering background. If designing and engineering are of interest to you, a four year college degree is the best route to take. However, if your desire is to maintain the functionality of avianic machines, a two year program will meet your needs. Programs vary in specialization. They include air traffic control, piloting, and airframe and powerplant technology. In order to work in this field there are a couple certifications that are good to have on your resume. First, is the certification of the FAA, given by the Federal Aviation Administration. This is something to keep in mind for those graduating from two year programs. There is also Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification, which licenses Aviation Electronics Technicians to operate aircraft radio equipment. Most employers will hire only those applicants who are certified.

What career opportunities are there in the field of aviation technology?

Aviation is one of the fastest growing industries and you don't have to be a pilot to work in the field of aviation. For every hour of flight, an airplane needs four hours of maintenance so, there are many opportunities in the field of aviation technology. The best opportunities are available for those who have completed an accredited program in aviation technology and earned a FAA and/or FCC certification. After the September 11th events, the aviation industry cut back on flights and crew, but over the last couple years aviation traffic has, again, increased and employment in the industry is expected to do the same. Job opportunities are expected to be the best at small commuter and regional airlines, at FAA repair stations, and in general aviation. Aviation Mechanics who are knowledgeable of the technological advances in the industry are especially in demand. Also, technicians who are cross-trained and able to work with complex aircraft systems should have the best job prospects. Some of the possible career walks that could be taken in the field of aviation technology include aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics, service technicians, aviation engineers, Aircraft pilots, and air traffic controllers.

How much money does someone working in aviation technology make?

In the field of aviation technology starting salaries are considerably better for those with an associate's degree, than those with only a certificate. The average salary for aircraft mechanics and technicians is around $42,000 a year, with a range from $35,100 to $73,200. The highest salaries are offered through commercial airlines.
