Programmatic Accreditation

Programmatic accreditation, also known as specialized or professional accreditation, is designed for specialized departments, programs, schools, or colleges within a university or institution that has already received accreditation. These accreditation agencies look for specific aspects of a department that set it apart from others like it.

Programmatic programs are available throughout the United States and each one indicates a top notch curriculum and faculty. The following agencies accredit at the program level.


Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)


The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is a national accreditation organization that oversees university programs in the subject areas of engineering, applied science, technology, and computing. As a respected accrediting association for the last 70 years, ABET has proven it can uphold strict educational standards. Today, there are over 2,700 programs in over 550 colleges and universities in the country that pass the quality standards of ABET.

Recognized as a national accrediting agency by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, ABET is made up of 28 professional and technical societies. Beyond accrediting American universities, ABET also helps to lead international agreements such as the Washington Accord and offers education credentials to those students who have earned degrees abroad.

Within the mission of ABET is the leading goal of promoting quality education and innovating new standards. To accomplish these goals, the members of ABET travel the world to assist developing universities. In countries and regions where education is still a working process, ABET helps universities plan for excellence in the engineering and technology fields.

The Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC)


There are 106 programs of journalism accredited by the Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The council oversees the soundness and quality of the education of mass communications. This discipline includes the professional fields of advertising, newspaper or magazine journalism, radio and television broadcasting, public relations, and photojournalism.

The ACEJMC accredits only programs, or departments of journalism, rather than the entire institution in which the programs lie. It oversees bachelor`s and master`s degree programs, but does not accredit Ph.D. programs. The council`s hope is to instill a professional integrity within the graduates of its accredited programs.

Journalism, and mass communications, in general, have become much more widely used as the world population has grown and spread to the tips of the globe. Having sound communicators in the field is integral not only to the safety of a country`s internal structure, but also to the world`s communication systems. The ACEJMC works to continually make the field of communication a field that is constantly learning and progressing, to make world communication both honest and efficient.

The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)


The American Association for Marriage and Family therapy offers accreditation for programs offering a master's, doctorate, or post-graduate degree in the field of clinical marriage and family therapy. AAMFT has been a recognized accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education since 1978. It is the major accreditor in the field, within the United States.

AAMFT is also recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, which is a non-governmental agency overlooking accrediting bodies. Many members of the AAMFT are highly qualified and well respected professionals in the field of marriage and family therapy, while others on the board represent the needs of the general public.

There are nearly 100 programs accredited by the AAMFT. All succeed in meeting the association's aim to meet established standards. The AAMFT is a specialized or programmatic accreditor, meaning it focuses only on issues within its accredited areas, not the entire school body.

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC)


Since 1920, the American Association of Community Colleges has worked toward becoming the leader and voice for the education offered through community colleges in the United States. The association was partially formed by a previous U.S. commissioner of education and was originally formed as a junior college accreditor, named the American Association of Junior Colleges. Since, the popularity of two-year colleges has changed the common term used to refer to them, from junior colleges to community colleges (though there are still many places in the country where they are most commonly called junior colleges).

Nearly 95 percent of today's community and junior colleges are accredited by the American Association of Community Colleges. That means there are over 10 million students a year that earn an associate's, or certificate degree through AACC accredited education. The association's colleges are located both in the United States and throughout the world, in places like Puerto Rico, Japan, Great Britain, Korea, and the United Arab Emirates.

Accreditation at the two-year college degree level is especially important since about 45 percent of all U.S. graduates are coming out of community colleges. The AACC is one of the six largest accreditation bodies, making it's influence on the trends and legislation concerning education very important. The AACC has ongoing interaction with many different federal departments to try to coordinate the quality of education with the goals and future of the country.

The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS)


The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences was founded in 1909, when Professor Ellen H. Richards, the first female graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, saw the need for an organization to look over the training of home and family management. The symbol of the AAFCS is a lamp, which stands to make better. That's also the motto of the organization and the essence of the science which it oversees. The American Association of Family Consumer Sciences aims to promote leadership in professionals within the field of family and consumer sciences.

More specifically, the focus of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences oversees the accreditation process of such programs to achieve the underlying goal of affecting social change through the health of both the individual and the family. If a program of family and consumer sciences is accredited, you can bet the AAFCS is the association overseeing its accreditation. The AAFCS is the only national organization which represents this professional field.

The accreditation parameter of the AAFCS is programmatic only, meaning it oversees the programs of family and consumer sciences only, not entire institutions.

The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU)


The American Association of State Colleges and Universities is the overarching body looking over the public colleges and universities in the United States. There are over 400 higher education institutions within the shadow of the AASCU's accrediting umbrella. The association's goal is to create and maintain a quality educational system open for all American citizens.

Public universities and colleges in America help over 55 percent of all the college graduates in the country receive a degree. Without the quality of a public education, the opportunity of education would not be available to most people in the United States. Accreditation ensures that public education meets all the training measures needed to have a fair shake in the employment race.

The AASCU strives to provide an education for those students who traditionally may not have a shot at higher education. It uses its clout to level the playing field both in U.S. education and in the professional realm. The American Council for Construction Education (ACCE)


The American Council for Construction Education is on a mission to spread the skills needed for quality construction technique to be implemented throughout the practice of development. The council sees accreditation as the central place where they can most readily make this happen. The world of construction is led by regulations implemented by states and counties. Therefore, the ACCE aims to teach a uniform set of practices through its accredited programs, to make the professionalism of the construction business become more and more prevalent.

The ACCEE helps promote its accredited programs by publishing the most current information on the schools offering these programs. The association is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, for its programs awarding bachelor's degrees in construction management, and technology. The American Council on Education (ACE)


Higher education is something many people take for granted today, but it wasn't always like that. Achieving a higher education was once something only an elite few, born into fortunate circumstances, were able to experience. The U.S. higher education system moved this educational trend ahead by leaps and bounds in the 19th and 20th centuries. That's when the framework for the opportunity to become an educated individual started to become evident for the larger population.

The American Council on Education is a both an institutional accreditor of colleges and universities, and a watchdog of the higher education system. It's goal is to work to create an opportunity for anyone who wants an education to become educated.

In recent years higher education has, again, started to pace toward an elitist institution. Tuition rates are going up and education is, thus, becoming further and further from attainability for many. The ACE is the major body that's working to make sure this trend is reversed. Through its accredited institutions, the goal of ACE is to help school presidents work together open the doors, once again, for all who want a higher education.

The American Culinary Federation (ACF)


The American Culinary Federation is the proud accreditor of culinary programs in every one of the United States. The commission of accreditation was established in 1986, after the growth of culinary programs in America was spurting at an accelerated rate. The commission is now recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as a valuable judge of quality culinary education.

The ACF focuses only on accrediting programs of culinary training, rather than whole institutions. The standards it holds its accredited programs up to are created by a board of qualified professionals in the field, who are also leaders in their industry. Only accredited programs, under the umbrella of the ACF are considered quality training routes in the field.

The commission takes it upon themselves to visit and certify each of the schools given their stamp of approval. Each school must meet stringent pre-establish standards to earn the commission's well respected endorsement.

The American Library Association (ALA)


Thousands of librarians across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico are trained through programs accredited by the American Library Association Committee . In all, there are 61 programs in 54 institutions accredited by the ALA. Each of these institutions must meet the highest standards in the field for education in library sciences in order to attain accreditation.

The association has been in existence for over a century. It was established in 1876 as an agency to provide the leadership needed to push the field forward into the generations to come. It works to set training standards that ensure librarians are equipped with the tools they need to educate their communities.

The accrediting council is an elected body of professionals, who dedicate their time to overseeing the standards set for programs of library education. Other committees of the ALA focus on improving the overall function of library systems and their place in improving information provided to communities.

The American Psychological Association (APA)


The accreditation council for the American Psychological Association is responsible for many different avenues of psychology education. While some accrediting organizations only over see a certain degree level, the APA oversees the quality of doctoral graduate training programs, internships, and postdoctoral residencies. The accreditation process for all of these different levels of training is intended to assure consistent quality across the wide array of programs offered in the United States.

All accreditation done by the American Psychological Association is separate from the government's involvement and functions as a credential of high quality education. A program with the stamp of approval by the APA is publicly recognized for being part of an exclusive group of "top notch" psychology training programs.

While accreditation of the APA comes with a few set standards in place, there is also a purposeful intention given to programs to define their own niche in the academic community. That's why some schools accredited under the APA's umbrella are known to be more specialized in one area than others. There are about 60 schools total holding a place under the accreditation of the APA.

The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)


The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education came into being in 1967 when four different groups of its kind merged into one. Through the certification and accreditation of schools the hope of the accreditation commission is to advance clinical pastoral education to a new level. Today, the ACPE consistently gets national and international recognition for setting standards which are both attainable, and highly ambitious.

Most pastors hold powerful positions within their communities and within society, so it is the association's goal to enforce the moral rights a pastor has before he or she is placed in a professional role. The field of religion is a general gray area compared to many other academic fields, so another major goal of the association is to set the standards pastors use to decipher and teach information. The accreditation commission of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education is focused on programmatic accreditation only, though some entire schools may be dedicated to pastoral education. These schools could also be eligible for accreditation by ACPE.

Association of American Universities (AAU)


The Association of American Universities is a century old organization started by 14 Ph.D. granting universities. Now there are over 60 universities, in the U.S. and Canada, that are part of the association. The group works together to uphold and increase the integrity of what it means to provide and receive a university education.

The mission of the Association of American Universities is to work together to form creative way to change and maintain the ways research is done in higher education institutions, as well as progress graduate and professional education to new levels of sophistication. Professionals in the forefront of university education participate in this ongoing conversation, sponsored and organized by the AAU.

University education is specifically different from that of college or two- year institutions. A university offers advanced training, beyond the bachelor's degree, in more than one discipline. Colleges and universities often offer similar undergraduate education, but it's a university that takes that extra step to research and dig, expanding into graduate and professional work.

The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)


The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs oversees business programs offering associate and bachelor's degrees. It is recognized as a national accreditor by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is a non-profit organization founded in 1916. A peer review board, made up of respected business professionals, oversees the accreditation process of business schools internationally. The Commission of English Language Program Accreditation (CEA)


Thousands of students from all over the world enter the U.S. each year to pursue degrees in higher education or to learn to speak English more fluently. These students are considered ESL students or EFL students and they are generally taught by ESL/EFL teachers. The most intense and most effective type of ESL program is an Intensive English Program, or IEP course. There are over 1,000 English language programs and institutions throughout the United States, and it's very important for foreign students that their program is accredited. That's where the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation is important. This commission sets the standards for the many different varieties of institutions that exist.

CEA was created in the 1960's, when a number of university-based English language programs came together to form a common set of standards for the field. By the mid 1980's there was an explosion of ESL/EFL programs in the country and in 1999 CEA was formed to be the governing organization over these programs.

The National Association of Schools of Public Affairs & Administration (NASPAA)


The Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration oversees the quality of master's programs offering training for the field of public affairs. The accredited institutions under the NASPAA undergo a stringent series of assessment to meet the commission's standards. The Computer Science Accreditation Commission (CSAC)


Training programs for software engineering, information systems, and computer science all fall under the accrediting umbrella of the Computer science Accreditation Commission of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board . The commission works under the overarching body of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, except it specializes in computer engineering disciplines.

The members of the board are appointed to serve as accrediting officers on the Computer Sciences Accreditation Commission. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs


The Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognizes the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs as a respected agency for overseeing the educational quality of master's degree programs in ten fields of counseling. The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA)


The Council for Interior Design is the major board in the United States in charge of overseeing over 100 programs of interior design. Thousands of designers have graduated from accredited programs and find their employment opportunities are much more favorable with CIDA approval.

The Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI)


The Aviation Accreditation Board International focuses on advancing the quality of aviation education and training, to help propel the field into newer, global realms. Established in 1988, the AABI has been creating and implementing standards that meet with CHEA protocol, in order to make the aviation field a well respected field of study. They accredit associate and bachelor's programs in aviation science.

The council focuses on quality aviation education worldwide. They hope to make strides on a global level to stimulate excellence, establish a uniform educational path, and help create credibility and acceptance of aviation programs in the academic community.

There are over 30 aviation programs accredited by the AABI. Programs range in specificity. Bachelor's an associate's degree programs include aviation management, aeronautical studies, aviation flight technology, applied meteorology, air traffic management and pilot training. These programs are scattered throughout America, in Indiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, Tennessee, New Jersey, Louisiana, Kansas, Virginia, Florida, Arizona, New Hampshire, and Alabama.

The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)


Working as an independent accrediting agency, the Council on Education for Public Health Works to uphold the standards of training in schools of public health. These are schools that train students for entry level positions in the field of public health and also provide opportunities to earn a Master's of Public Health degree. Many of these institutions have programs with titles such as, "School of Public health," "Community Health Education," or "Community Health/Preventative Medicine."

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)


There are hundreds of programs throughout the United States accredited by the Council on Social Work Education . The nationally known specialized accreditor strives to improve the quality of social work education and also works to set government policies to move the ability of social workers forward. In the grand scheme of things, CSWE is doing all of this in order to improve the quality and well-being of people's lives who are served by the social work agency.

The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)


If you plan on going into architecture, and becoming a board certified architect, then the accreditation by the National Architectural Accrediting Board is essential. Almost all states require candidates for architect board exams to be graduates of programs with an accreditation from the NAAB. This is a sort of "rite of passage" into the field of architecture.

Employers generally know that if they hire an architect from an NAAB accredited school, they're getting a competent graduate, who has the technical and personal skills to succeed in the field. Since 1976, private post-secondary educational institutions have had The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities to look to for both advice and protections. Started as two separate bodies, including the Foundation for Independent Higher Education and the Council for Independent Colleges, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities specializes in upholding the quality and specialty of private colleges and universities in the United States.

Some of the many types of schools included under the umbrella of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities include major universities, religious-based colleges, community colleges, and specialty arts schools. There are over 1000 colleges and universities accredited by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Because of the work of NAICU, institutions of private post-secondary education have been able to keep their special roles within higher education, while, at the same time, they hold onto the original framework on which they were built.

The National Association of State Universities & Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC)


For over 119 years the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges has been creating space for education to take place, and making sure all who wish to, can have access to higher education. Back in the latter half of the 1800's, the government set aside money to build campuses throughout the United States that could teach agriculture, military tactics and mechanic arts to the masses. These were skills greatly needed in that time.

As the nation progressed, the land-grand universities slowly turned into liberal arts institutions. They made it possible for all working class citizens to get a liberal arts education. Over the years, these universities have grown to over 200, with at least one in every state.

The National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges is still involved in the process of pushing these institutions to the next level. While it still strives to provide education for working class citizens, the NASULGC also works to make the education offered through land-grant universities an experience which improves society. Today, there are millions of graduates from NASULGC accredited schools in the work force.

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)


The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education is dedicated to improving the quality of teacher training in the United States. The council was founded in 1954 as an independent program accrediting agency by the team work of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, the National Education Association, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and the National School Boards Association.

Professionals involved with NCATE believe teaching children in the most effective way possible is one of the most important things we can do to move the right direction as a society. The council accredits training programs for teachers becoming prepared for levels from pre-school to 12th grade. It uses a performance-based accrediting system that works to create competent teachers who will change the way education is done today.

NCATE professionals believe every student deserves to learn from a highly qualified teacher, coach, specialist or administrator and they strive to create standards that raise the bar in educational training. There are currently 623 colleges of education accredited by the NCATE and there are more than 100 more striving to fit under the council's fostering umbrella.

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)


There are 100 accredited programs accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association . The motive behind accreditation coincides with the association's mission "to advance parks, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people."

The accreditation commission is a quality assessment team that wants to make sure future professionals coming into the field of parks and recreation are prepared for the changing nature of the field. The organization is concerned with continuing the urban and rural planning that the NRPA has helped spearhead throughout the last 100 years.

Through accreditation, the NRPA is hoping that future professionals will develop an educated voice of concern for the millions of acres of open land that's bulldozed and paved over in the United States, instead of manicured for natural, public use. Accrediting programs are churning out professionals who are interested in conservation of public land, for purposes such as parks, and biking and hiking trails.

The New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education


Education within New York is governed by one state-wide accrediting agency. The New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education are an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. As an institutional accreditor, this board looks over an entire institutional system to score the overall quality of education offered.

This board of Regents was established in 1965 for the purpose of establishing university eligibility to government funding. The process for the New York State of Regents takes up to 18 months to complete. It involves an institution's application, self-evaluation, and then a lengthy process of regent visits and assessments. The final stamp of approval comes from the director of regents, after consultation with the entire board.

Once given the 'okay' by the board of regents, a university or college is granted accreditation for up to 10 years. The amount of time and the type of accreditation depend on standards set by the board.

The Planning Accreditation Board (PAB)


The Planning Accreditation Board isn't an accrediting agency at all. This is a board that acts more like a consulting agency for schools looking to become accredited. PAB assists schools by observing a program's educational protocol and then discussing with school leaders how things should be altered in order to be considered for accreditation.

The professionals that sit on the Planning Accreditation Board are all well versed in the policies and check-off lists for most national and regional accrediting agencies. They are, however, in no way affiliated with accrediting agencies. PAB is joined by the American Institute of Certified Planners, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, and the American Planning Association to make the accreditation process a little less of an uphill battle for unaccredited schools and programs.

By helping in the process of accreditation, the PAB has a committed interest in achieving the highest standards in quality education. Accreditation is a private, voluntary process in the United States, so schools are not required to be accredited in order to practice. But if there are more accredited schools and programs in the United States, the educational standards will rise because requirements will more likely meet a certain level of quality.

The Society of American Foresters (SAF)


For over a century the Society of American Foresters has been working to create a national network of foresters. It also works to achieve a level of education that can help propel the technology into the future of change. When many people hear the term forestry they think of loggers cutting down trees, but the field is much more complex. Much of today's forestry science is focused on creating strategies of conservation and working to find ways to live and work more peacefully with living forests.

The programs accredited by the Society of American Foresters meet specific curriculum standards and offer bachelor's and master's degrees. SAF is a not profit organization that aims to promote the health of forest ecosystems through awareness of professional training.

The Society of American Foresters is always working to achieve its core value of educating people on global health, forest sustainability, and sound forest management.

The Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC)


The Teacher Education Accreditation Council was founded in 1997 to promote quality teacher training programs in colleges and universities throughout the United States. This is a non-profit organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and by the U.S. Department of Education. TEAC also has membership ties with the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditation, the American Council on Education, Association of Teacher Educators, and the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification.

The central goal of TEAC is to support the field of education by ensuring that teachers are competent, and qualified before going into the trenches of the profession. It oversees teacher training programs for pre-K through grade 12 teachers both in the undergraduate and graduate levels. TEAC oversees the teacher training program within a college only, not the overall college or university sponsoring the program.

From small liberal arts colleges, to larger higher education institutions, TEAC is examining and accrediting teacher training programs throughout the country, as well as professional continuing education programs. Currently there are over a dozen teacher training programs in the U.S. accredited by TEAC.
