What kinds of accounting degrees are out there?

The first level in accounting degrees is an associate's degree. Studying accounting readies the student not only to work in the accounting arena, but also provides groundwork in business finance. An associate degree in accounting takes about two years to complete and will open doors to be a bookkeeper, accounts receivable or payable clerk, payroll clerk, and other entry-level positions. The next level of education is the bachelor degree in accounting. The Bachelor of Science degree program takes about four years to complete and prepares students with a basic knowledge of and readies them for jobs in the accounting field. To further your accounting education look to the Master of Science in Professional Accounting. After receiving a bachelor's or master's degree accountants usually go on to become certified public accountants (CPAs), certified internal auditors (CIA), or a certified managerial accountants (CMA).

If you are already in the field and not interested in pursuing a degree, become an Accounting Specialist (AS). In the AS program you will train for collections, personal income taxes, and accounting clerks as well as accounts receivable and payable specialists, and professional bookkeeper positions. The coursework is geared toward accounting theory and practical use with computerized accounting. Upon completion of the program students will be encouraged to then sit for the Certified Bookkeeper (CB) national certification.

How much money do accountants make?

Accounting is a good career choice with excellent salary potential. As with any other career path, level of education and seniority play a large part in the salary associated with the job. A bookkeeper with an associate degree could earn $30,000 to $40,000. A public auditor with an accounting degree and certification can earn $60,000 a year. A payroll clerk with a bachelor degree and some supervisory experience could earn $65,000. A CPA or CIA auditor might earn $80,000. A professional with a bachelor degree, CPA status, and field experience may earn over a $100,000 a year. Then those with a master's degree and CPA status could earn anywhere from $90,000 to $110,000.
